New Oxford University Study Reveals How To Effectively Lose Weight Long Term

A major trial has proven that a combination of Total Diet Replacement programmes (TDRs) and one-to-one support, could lead to better weight loss results than the usual NHS care route.

What’s more, the study showed that TDRs are a safe and effective way to lose weight, with significant weight loss continuing at least until the one year mark.

Participants in the trial lost an average of one and a half stone on The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan. Meanwhile, those who were referred for nurse-led care lost an average of half a stone.

How fab is that? We believe that your very own diet consultant and a big dollop of support is the key to success.

The Clever Bit

Are you into your science? Here are the facts:

  • The research involved 278 adults, who had a BMI of more than 30.

  • People who were randomly assigned to The 1:1 Diet programme, replaced their usual foods with The 1:1 Diet products which provided approximately 810 kcal per day for eight weeks, followed by a carefully managed stepped four-week regular food re-introduction. After that, patients were offered one product a day for 24 weeks to help manage their weight.

  • They were also given weekly one-to-one support, focussing on goal-setting, problem-solving, encouragement and reassurance, and preparation for weight maintenance, by a 1:1 Diet Consultant. This support was weekly for the first 12 weeks and then monthly up to 24 weeks.

  • The trial was known as DROPLET (Doctor Referral of Overweight People to Low Energy Treatment).

  • The trial was run by Professor Susan Jebb, Professor Paul Aveyard & Dr Nerys Astbury at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences at the University of Oxford.

Some individuals are transformed almost beyond imagination by large weight losses and improved quality of health

– Professor Anthony Leeds, previous Medical Director of The 1:1 Diet

Professor Anthony Leeds, previous Medical Director of The 1:1 Diet, said the DROPLET results were very encouraging;

“The DROPLET trial shows that this type of weight loss, which could transform how we look after people who are obese, can be delivered safely and successfully in a community setting in collaboration with GPs and practice nurses.

“Some individuals are transformed almost beyond imagination by large weight losses and improved quality of health. These larger than usual weight losses are highly motivating for heavy people . . . they often feel better after just a week or so. They may sleep better, move more easily, and have less joint pain. In fact, we have some evidence that quality of life is better after a one to two stone weight loss.”

One-to-one Support Helped Emma Lose Weight On DROPLET Trial

Super slimmer, Emma Luff, was one of the dieters who took part in the trial. Read about her transformation, supported by her very own diet consultant, Gemma Cottingham.
